Established on April 30, 1962 in the erstwhile princely state of Patiala with the main mandate of furthering the cause of Punjabi language, art and culture, Punjabi University has since its inception has evolved into multi-dimensional and multi-faculty University and multi-faceted University in the northern region of our country. It can lay its claim to have emerged as the largest State University in the region, spread across 600 acres of land in three states of Punjab, Uttrakhand and Himachal Pradesh. It constitutes a unique blend of traditional, modern and innovative knowledge through various mediums of learning through 65 teaching and research Departments on its Campus, five Regional Centres, six Neighbourhood Campuses and 278 Colleges affiliated to it. It has earned the unique distinction of emerging as the “Best Sports University” in the country by winning the prestigious MAKA Trophy for 10 times.

Another exclusivity of Punjabi University, Patiala, lies in the fact that it has been chosen as one of the 21 Educational Multimedia Research Centres (EMRCs) by the UGC and MHRD, spread across the country and the only one, covering the States of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttrakhand and Union Territory of Chandigarh to impart electronic and digital education based on the 'reaching the unreachable' and 'beyond the classroom' concepts of education to provide quality education at the doorsteps of the students. The Indian Government's innovative endeavour in shape of launching the SWAYAM and SWAYAM Prabha projects enabling it to transcend all geographical boundaries to bridge the increasing gap between the privileged and the non-privileged student community in our country.

Known for its competence and creativity in the field of electronic and digital multimedia content development over the years, I am sure, our EMRC would excel in every department of producing and providing education through the cyberspace in the region in the best possible manner.
